Abby Kimball has just moved to New England with her boyfriend and is trying to settle in, but the experience is proving to be quite unsettling, to say the least. While on a tour of local historic homes, Abby witnesses a family scene that leaves her gasping for breath - because the family has been dead for nearly a century. Another haunting episode follows, and another, until it seems to Abby that everything she touches is drawing her in, calling to her from the past.
Abby would doubt her sanity if it weren't for Ned Newhall, the kind and knowledgeable guide on that disturbing house tour. Rather than telling her she's hallucinating, Ned takes an interest in Abby's strange encounters and encourages her to figure out what's going on, starting with investigating the story of the family she saw and exploring her own past.
But as Abby begins to piece together a history that's as moving as it is shocking and unravels a long-ago mystery that nearly tore her family apart, she also begins to suspect that Ned's got secrets of his own and that his interest may be driven as much by a taste for romance as by a love for history.

The original premise of this book sounded intriguing enough- a young couple moves to Waltham as Brad, the boyfriend of Abby Kimball, gets a lucrative job. Abby, a former teacher, now unemployed, seeks to find ways to spend her days at home. So she goes on a historic house tour, and, in one of the houses spots a family who had, we later learn, has been dead for over a century. She passes out upon the discovery, and the tour docent, Ned, helps revive her and pays attention to her rather strange tale of seeing these ghosts. The reader is told that Abby has never had such visions. All of which leads to a beginning of a mission of discovery, which includes research at a local library and trips to various historic sites, to find that there is a relation between these spirits which Abby sees and Abby herself. Abby and Ned then arrange meetings in which Abby shares notes about her discoveries. Meanwhile, visions continue to appear, once when Abby takes delivery of her great grandmother's chair, and then again when she visits a cemetery. But something's not right with this book.
Many stories involving spirits and paranormal sightings have an element of suspense in them. In this book, the most suspenseful scene seemed to be when she first tries to sit in the rocking chair and gets a jolt- then a vision. Meanwhile, much of the book is focused on Abby eventually getting a job, her breaking up with her arrogant boyfriend Brad, and her eventually getting romantic with Ned. All of these cliches rather than elements of suspense. So where are we left? Will Abby and Ned continue to unearth spirits who will give then clues to their own lives? That's how the book seemingly ended for me. Meanwhile, knowing that the whole premise gets ponderous and, at times, silly, I'll just bail out of this series.

Relatively Dead Relatively Dead Mysteries Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Sheila Connolly Emily Durante Tantor Audio Books Reviews
I absolutely LOVE this series. This book kept me hooked until the very end and even then, I wanted more. The storyline was unique and different from all of the other cozy mysteries I have read in the past. It was original and fun. Abby is an enjoyable heroine who found herself in the center of experiencing residual hauntings upon her move to the Lexington/Concord Massachusetts area. As it is soon revealed these sightings are from her ancestors. The author cleverly integrates genealogy and history. She draws you into the addictive highs and lows of researching in world of genealogy. I can’t wait to read what is in store for this series. Reading this book gave me the same adrenaline rush I feel when I’m searching for my own ancestors. I would love to have the visions that Abby does because placing your ancestors in context to their everyday life and extraordinary moments in history, would be amazing. Definitely read this book. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.
First of all, this book was grossly mislabeled. It should be called Whiny Girl Becomes Expert at Genealogy with a Side of Haunting. The "heroine" is not very likable, she's a Casper Milquetoast who whines about her low and feels sorry for herself. Oh yes she sees her dead relatives, or has visions or vignettes, no one can decide apparently and from what I've read, by book 4 she still doesn't have a name for it. There's not much mystery or haunting going on a LOT of filler content. Ugh.
I'm a huge fan of supernatural mysteries. I'll be honest, there are a few other authors out there doing it better, for example, The Brianna Sullivan Mysteries are great in this respect. I'm not sure what you would call this book, but it isn't a mystery. That being said, I like Abby (the main character), the relationship with her boyfriend was totally predictable. The burgeoning romance with Ned, seemed a bit forced at times. I like Ned, but he's just a nice guy, sometimes he feels a bit clinical.
The historical aspect is interesting, especially if you like history. Although, at times it felt a bit dry and I love history. It's a relaxing read. It doesn't grip you and there is no suspense. But, once I was in I wanted to see how it turned out. Admittedly, I have even gone on to the next two books in the series, but I honestly feel conflicted about them. And, I wish there was a bit more interaction with the supernatural.
It's not a bad book, it's just not a mystery. It's not a life changer and it's not the best thing I've read. But, it's not horrible. Honestly, there are far worse things you could curl up on a couch and read.
